Thrifty Christmas Yard Decorations

1. Take an empty milk jug and fill it about half full of water.

2. Line up several milk jugs along the path you want lit.

3. Then work your way down the strand inserting 1 bulb in each jug.

4. Voila! You have a beautiful glowing path!

As you can see, we currently have no snow, but these look even better when we do! They get covered in snow, so you have a multi colored glowing bank of snow.

    5. Seems dangerous. Water and electric? Recipe for disaster.

      1. Snow turns to water... they are in "frozen water" if it snows in your area.

    6. Actually, the water is only a few inches deep, and it freezes to the bottom of the jug. The lights are a good 7" off the ice in the bottom of the jug. The water/electricity sinerio is more dangerous with the lights on your house sitting under snow then they are in these empty milk jugs. ;)

    7. We saw some one with lights strung from a tree with the milk jugs, looked kinda silly in the day light but really nice at night, good idea I think

    8. We live in FLorida not sure about the water any other ideas.

    9. You could weigh down the milk jugs with sand instead of water to avoid concern over water with electricity.

    10. I would not take the chance of a light falling down into the water. Use sand to be safer. Water and electric do not mix no matter how careful you are. please do not use water!!!

    11. This is a good idea, using outdoor-rated lights should eliminate any problem with the water issue. If they are safe to use in the snow and rain, what difference does it make if the are above a container of water? By the way, the word you were looking for is not walla, it is a French word, "voila". And the correct spelling is "scenario".

    14. We have Halloween milk jugs right now. Draw a jack-o-lantern faces on them, fill them with water and drop in one or two glow sticks. We used them at Halloween camp a few weeks ago and I'm picking up more glow sticks from the dollar store so we can use them again for Trunk or Treat at Church next week. Then into the recycling.

    16. You could leave the jugs outside until the water freezes and then put the lights in

    17. Try using floral rocks or marbles. Could be used year after year. Just pour the rocks/marbles into one jug for storage.

Love the idea of glowsticks, the jugs might float in a swimming pool or pond.

    18. I knew I was saving my milk jugs for some reason. Now I know why. I was trying to think of something "unusual" to decorate outside this year. I think this is it.

    19. I did this last year on my back deck, had neighbors asking me what they were, they loved them. It was very nice to sit in the house, with a fire in the fire place, watching the lights change colors. Beautiful. Will do it again this year.

    20. Thank you Ms. Michelle. I have never heard this idea, I live in New Mexico, so not much of a chance of snow, so I painted santa and snowmen faces on the jugs so during the day it looked cute, too. This idea is very creative, thanks again!!

    23. I live in the UK & was looking for unusual & inexpensive ways to decorate our outside as Outdoor decorations can be pretty expensive over here. Had seen this idea for Halloween, but never got around to doing the jac-o-latern thing, so decided to do it for Christmas garden lights.
