FREE answer to the question "What's for dinner?"

My husband and kids came home from school today and said "I'm starving, what's for dinner?"  To which I replied......"I don't know".

I then started listing off places we have coupons to: Papa Johns (which is cheaper on Monday for their Customer Appreciation sale), Papa Murphys, Burger King......  Then my husband asks if we have anything we can make at home (to save money....isn't he great?  Guess I should have suggested Thai food, that would have gotten me a night off from cooking! :)

My ol' fall back to the "Do we have anything to make?" is frozen pizza.....which we are currently out of.  So I came up with Navajo Tacos.

If you've never had Navajo Tacos, they are delicious and SO EASY to make.  Here's my recipe:
Quick Scone Recipe
7/8 cup Milk
1 Tablespoon Shortening
1/2 cup warm water
1 Tablespoon yeast
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoon sugar

  • Scald the milk and shortening, set aside until luke warm
  • dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup water
  • Mix flour, baking powder and sugar in a large bowl
  • add water/yeast mixture and milk/shortening mixture to the dry ingredients.
Knead 10 times, cover and let rise for 10 minutes.

Form the dough into balls and gently stretch each ball into a disk.  Fry the scone in a deep fryer or in a pan of hot oil on the stove. Makes about 8 scones

Add Chili, sour cream, salsa, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce.....any taco toppings you like.  Enjoy!

Total Thrifty cost of dinner was $0.  We had all the supplies for this meal on hand. :)

  1. Perhaps not as thrifty as making your own...but for one that doesn't do well with yeast, I use Rhodes Rolls/Bread. I always keep them on hand (they always have great coupons). Just let them thaw on the counter (or zap in the microwave when in a pinch, I promise they're fine) stretch them out and fry.

  2. Whatever works Nic, I'm sure it's thriftier then going out to eat! :) My mom use to make "homemade" dounuts with pillsbury biskets. We loved them as kids and we didn't know the difference.
