My husband is a teacher. I helped him move some things this year and for the first time in 9 years I got a good look at his "hand-me-down desk" he got from a fellow teacher when he started. I was so excited to get started on this makeover I didn't take a before pic. It was solid wood (the only thing going for it) and dark oak. The thing weighed a TON.
So this desk had scratches, carvings, chips, worn stain, stickers and a message to the former teacher "Hi Mr. E" written in black sharpie and the top of the desk was 2 shades lighter because it was so full of scratches.
School started this week, so we were in a time crunch. I told him his desk was hideous (guess what, he didn't care.....men....) and that I wanted to paint it. I let the thought sink in for a few days then I gave him the following options:
- Paint it all black
- Paint it all blue and stick his favorite sports team logos on it (which all happen to have blue in them except for the Raiders)
- Paint it school colors, Red and Black.
Then I found a logo of our alma mater Utah State University and printed it off on my printer. I then used my light table to trace the image on a piece of white vinyl.
I then cut out the image with my Exacto knife, took of the extra parts and sent it to school with my husband after I taught him how to put on a vinyl decal.
And he took the Michigan sign I made for him HERE and popped off the "M" and attached it on the side of his desk. I guess it doesn't bother him that it's off center......men.....lolKind of fun for a classroom don't ya think? :)
We are on the look out for 2 more decals to fill the other 2 panels on the front.

ReplyDeleteI love this makeover! When I got to the picture of the bright blue paint, I must admit I got a bit scared--but the end result is FABULOUS! Really great job!
ReplyDeleteYa, the paint turned out a little brighter then we hoped. It doesn't help that there are 30 florescent lights shining on it in his classroom. ;)
ReplyDeleteI love that! Bet he's the coolest teacher in school. How fun!
ReplyDeleteStopping over from Tip Junkie and totally love this idea! I was a high school teacher for a long time and would have loved something like this! Although, as a Nebraska fan, the colors are all wrong! ;)
ReplyDeleteAwesome job on the desk. Very creative.
